2006 Pastor's Report

I would describe 2006 as a solid year. There was nothing in 2006 that could be described as spectacular. The year did not make a large splash in the headlines. We are not bursting at the seams. We accomplished our unwritten purpose that is to preach the gospel, to provide the services of the church to the members, friends of the congregation and community, to promote the kingdom in life as we relate to all the people about us.

In 2006 I officiated at 7 funerals, 1 wedding, and 4 baptisms. I preached approximately 56 sermons for Worship, Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter, and conducted worship at 9:00 a.m. on the first Thursday of the month at Greenway. We participated in the Easter Sunrise Service at Midland United Methodist Church. I was pleased to present the talk at the VFW Memorial Day observance at the Arena Elementary School.

I continued to serve on the ATODA School Community Committee that has as its concerns issues and policies dealing with the use of alcohol and other drugs including tobacco. Several fine programs were planned and executed for middle and high school students. Unfortunately, the grant for the position of ATODA Coordinator was not renewed and the program ended in June 2006. I continue to serve as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Wisconsin Congregational Ministers Association. I am also the Chairperson of the Spring Green Zoning Appeals Board, a member of the Arena Historians and the Spring Green Cemetery Board.

I am constantly reminded of a statement that was made to me by a guest at an Annual Church Picnic in August of 1999. The person said to me, "You have a fine facility that is paid for, some of the most influential people in the village as members, you are a fine pastor who provides excellent sermons, you ought to be the largest church in the village." I responded to the person with, "Yes that's true. We only have one liability. We are Congregationalists."

This is not really a liability. What it does mean is that our Congregational polity has a somewhat narrow appeal to the people of our area. We live in a time when many people want certainty. People desire direction and a firm hand to guide them in the way they think they ought to go. We appeal to individual autonomy and personal conscience. We are a Covenanted people. It is not my position to tell you what to do, what to believe, how to behave, or how to relate. I can and do try to provide you with the basic biblical information and principles by which you may govern your life and relationships. This is not done in an authoritative way for the very reason that we are Congregationalist.

Because of our emphasis on individual autonomy and personal responsibility we may not, though we could very well be, if you would so choose, to be the largest church in the village. We could plan to engage in activities that would appeal to the people in the Arena Area. We could publicize our polity and our purpose with a vigor that we have not pursued to this point. We could invite our friends and neighbors who are seeking what we provide to come and join us. We could assume all the obligations of participation with good cheer and helpfulness and find that we could grow, if that is what we want to do. I would like to grow, but I cannot do it on my own. Growth is something that we must do together.

As we grow in the spirit; as we grow in the word; as we grow in relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; let us grow in the village.

Sunday School Annual Report for 2006

Sunday school classes for the children continue to be held each Sunday following Children's Time in the worship service. We added an additional age group to Sunday school this year. Teachers are Jim Favreau, Karen Wilkinson and Steve Wilkinson. Substitutes are Joanne Brown and Colleen Wahljohnson. David C. Cook, Bible in Life Series is the Sunday school curriculum being used. Quinton Lewis received a Bible, and Amayssia Wahljohnson received a cross necklace as they entered into 2nd grade this year.

The children provide special music every other week during the worship service. In August the children participated in a one day Daily Vacation Bible School learning about the Ten Commandments. A Christmas play was presented one Sunday in December.

We see their joy and enthusiasm for learning God's word and hear the praise in their voices as they make a joyful noise until the Lord. Pray for us as we minister to these boys and girls weekly.

Volunteer Missionary Society Annual Report - 2006

The Volunteer-Missionary Society usually meets on the first Wednesday of each month in the church fellowship room at 1 :30 p.m. Six meetings were held at the church this year with two meetings held elsewhere tying quilts. This year the officers are:

President - Marion Sanford, Secretary/Treasurer - Vivian Dodge. We combined the secretary and treasurer jobs into one due to the lack of members. One of our members, Beryl Anding passed away in May and we helped serve at her funeral.

We made 24 lap robes and Linus blankets plus 3 bears. Eight blankets each were given to Heartland Country Village, Greenway Manor and Linus Club project.

Usually devotions were held one month and a project the next month, which was to tie the quilts and lap robes.

We donated money to the Salvation Army and to the Daily Bread that is distributed to the families at church.
