Second Sunday: PEACE

INTRODUCTORY SENTENCES:

We gather around the advent wreath today knowing that we are not perfect—that we all make mistakes and do bad things. Only Jesus obeyed God fully. He helps us to live as God wants us to live and he gives us his peace.

SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 85.8-13, New Living Translation

8 I listen carefully to what God the LORD is saying, for he speaks peace to his faithful people. But let them not return to their foolish ways. 9 Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him, so our land will be filled with his glory. 10 Unfailing love and truth have met together. Righteousness and peace have kissed! 11 Truth springs up from the earth, and righteousness smiles down from heaven. 12 Yes, the LORD pours down his blessings. Our land will yield its bountiful harvest. 13 Righteousness goes as a herald before him, preparing the way for his steps. Psalm 85:8-13 (NLT)

LIGHT THE FIRST ADVENT CANDLE: HOPE

LIGHT THE SECOND ADVENT CANDLE: THE CANDLE OF PEACE:

READ THE FOLLOWING:

We light this candle to proclaim the coming of the light of God into our darkness. With the coming of this light there is peace, for Christ is called the “Prince of Peace.” His name is also Emmanuel, ‘God with us.” His presence with us gives us peace day by day

OFFER A PRAYER (You may use this one, or one of your choosing.):

Eternal God, we thank you that through all the years you have given peace to your people. Help us to have your peace in our lives. We pray that, in this advent season, we may, by what we do, show your presence to the sick, the hungry, and the lonely, so that they too may have peace. Amen.
